The Education Council of State unanimously Thursday to renew its contract on the odyssey of the Coweta school cyber-Comté and its partners, Georgia Virtual Academy for two years longer.
“Virtual learning is definitely the thing for the future,” the School Board Member Linda Zechmann said at a meeting of the Committee. “This school is unique in offering parents the choice throughout the state.
Extension of the Charter came after careful consideration of the school on the implementation of standardized tests. Georgia Virtual Academy, which two years ago provides instruction to Odyssey Online, caused the special charter school did not respond adequately yearly progress to meet the targets for the pupils in 2007-08. The school lacks brand equity and mathematics tests for students with disabilities and the poor.
Matt Arkin, director of the School of GVA, says he has plenty of time for the students to virtual learning and to decide whether this is good for them. Approximately 44 percent of the gross value added in the first class were from the school house.
“In the eighth year, 83 percent of students in the VAB came after a year of mathematics and 55 percent of the students came two years later than planned in mathematics,” said Arkin. “We were able to catch up, many of them … We are looking forward to the release of the AYP list this year.”
Andrew Broye a managing partner of the charter schools, said the extension to two years would give the Board the progress of the school.
Member of the Board Brian Burdett Odyssey is a “guinea pig”, which should be a certain latitude. “They make their way,” he said.
The process of renewal of the Charter, however, nixed odyssey in June to the state that it is free to petition to the Georgia Charter Schools Commission of the new authorization, which had more than money. Odyssey gets about $ 3100 per pupil as a state chartered school. As the charter school, but it would also be for a spot on the state of the funds allocated to 163 districts carved from the school.
Arkin says Odyssey, which has Coweta on a campus 2004, moves next to a school to expand its range. “Virtual schools in other states are capable of giving students the art, music, foreign languages, other teachers,” said Arkin. “We are capable of more on a level equal rights [are].”
During this time, the school of federal funds for the first time this autumn. The government has unanimously decided to him more than $ 572.000 for the education of the poor. About half of the school is it for free or reduced lunch.
Arkin says that the funds for the recruitment GVA 10 Title I teacher. GVA has a total of 100 teachers, at their home in August.
