Prof. Wijeyesekera conferred an honorary Doctor of Science

The honorary Doctor of Science (DSC), (honoris causa) was conferred on Dayantha Professor Wijeyesekera, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to higher education, development and the development of the Universidad Nacional de General at the 30th Convocation of University of Moratuwa, the BMICH.
This is the fourth doctorate was conferred with the first Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, the doctor of the University (DUniv) of the United Kingdom’s Open University and Dr. Phil (DLitt) from the Open University.
Dean Faculty of Engineering Prof. Ananda Jayawardena Wijeyesekera teacher described her as a person who has not pursued a formal education that is both a symbol and focus of its future multi-faceted career. ”
Who made valuable contributions in front of the Department of Civil Engineering, notably the transition to a new engineering complex, the introduction, development and promotion of many academic disciplines, especially in traffic engineering and coastal engineering, areas in which the University of Moratuwa, has become a center of excellence, “he said.
Professor Wijeyesekera then left his home grounds “to become the Vice-Chancellor of the Open University from 1985 to 1994, for three terms. One of his major achievements was to make an issue of engineering education at a distance.
He also provided leadership, not only nationally but also in Asia, the emergence of the concept of open and distance learning. It also managed to attract some of the best researchers in the country (including some of Moratuwa) give the best for this purpose.
After his time at the Open University, Professor Wijeyesekera returned to the Moratuwa University and became the Vice-Chancellor from 1999 to 2005 for two terms.
Here, has consolidated his first contribution as a pioneer in the field of academia and industry and was instrumental in setting up a business arm of the university, the first in Sri Lanka’s university system.
It was the only Sri Lankan to hold the post of Vice-Chancellor of two universities in Sri Lanka.
It was also the Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors, twice – both accomplishments may be unique in the world.
Prof. Wijeyesekera deliver the Convocation Address said the importance of education for sustainable development to preserve the Earth and highlighted the work of graduates, graduates and teachers should have the personal in that direction.
He also stressed the importance of the construction and development rather than destruction, the abuse of knowledge and talent.
